Machine Vision: Automatic video surveillance, inspection and guidance
NTT Private 5G is the enabler to help industries flourish and it can be used to address specific use cases to support business outcomes and, in this blog, we’ll be highlighting machine vision.Due to significant cost reductions related to integrating surveillance cameras onto enterprise networks, the explosion of surveillance camera usage has led many to believe that collecting and analyzing video is now the go-to technology for the protection and monitoring of people and physical assets for insurance, health and physical safety purposes. This has given birth to the concept of “Machine Vision”.
Machine vision encompasses the technology and methods used to provide imaging-based automatic inspection and analysis for various applications. These applications include (but are not limited to) automatic inspection, process control, robot guidance, object detection, automated vision testing and measurement, usually in industrial environments.
Machine vision allows for the capturing of images through lenses and sensors, then sending those images to an industrial computer for processing and analysis. These use cases range from simple applications in sorting materials in production lines in a factory, to smarter vision-guided automation applications. In many cases, we’re seeing this technology being applied to address worker safety which is a big deal and can become very costly, enforcing it manually is often way too labor intensive.
The landscape of industrial manufacturing automation is changing, and machine vision technologies will drive more advancements in accuracy and efficiency in enterprise operations. But these operations will need a network that is highly reliable, has superior uplink speed, and can handle heavy usage - more cameras, more devices all within the network. Not to mention, super low latency to accommodate frame rates. Another aspect to consider is that the trend is executing the AI processing in the cloud, so you need an efficient connection between onsite devices and that cloud processing.
With machine vision technology, many manual operations can be replaced by automated machines. These capabilities save time and reduce costs as image recognition will eliminate human error. For example, on a production line, a machine vision system can inspect hundreds, or even thousands, of parts per minute. A machine vision system can easily inspect object details too small to be seen by the human eye. This technology brings additional safety and operational benefits in a manufacturing process and protects workers from hazardous environments.
NTT's Private 5G networks will enable the ultra-low latency, high-throughput and reliable connection requirements these critical machine vision applications need to effectively meet business outcomes. Moreover, it will ensure that industrial production lines can be optimized using big data and AI technology to analyse production demand and troubleshoot problems by intelligent monitoring.

5G is the fifth generation of cellular wireless technology and the new standard for mobile communications. It offers lower latency, higher data-transfer speed, higher reliability, and more capacity to carry a larger number of connections, than previous standards. For more information on “the what and the why” around 5G, please read NTT’s review of the 5G networking technology.
Private 5G networking will be a true enabler for business growth as it was designed to address various use cases across verticals, all within the same network, using the respective enhancements of that network.
NTT’s Private 5G is an innovative industrial grade private wireless network that connects your teams onsite and devices from the edge to the cloud to empower you with speed, control, security and total coverage – transforming client experience, digital experience and employee experience.
